In Africa

I have made it safely to Botswana! It took about 38 hours of transit, but we’re finally here! Our first couple of days have set up the next 9 weeks of Pre-Service Training (PST), during which we will learn everything we need to be successful in Botswana. The staff seems great – they are all helpful and knowledgable about the culture and Peace Corps. We have started Setswana (language) training, and have sessions to prepare us for service all day.

It surprises me how diverse my training class is. We range in age from 22 to 84 (we have the oldest trainee ever), race, sexuality, culture, experience, etc. Many of us have a similar world-view, however, which means we all get along pretty well. I have a feeling that these people will be great assets to my service, both professionally and personally, and I hope I’ll be one to them. We have already started discussing travel around the continent and elsewhere. I’m excited to get back to South Africa for a visit, and maybe even climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. This will be a fun group for those adventures.

We meet our host families on Thursday, where we will live for the duration of PST. I’m a little nervous, but like everything with Peace Corps, one can only prepare for the unexpected. It will be an experience.

Well, I just wanted to get a post in while I had some down time and semi-reliable internet. We will be getting cell phones tomorrow, so email me if you want my number. I would suggest setting up a Skype account and putting credits on it to call me. Again, I am not sure what the next 9 weeks will be like in terms of internet, especially since I am not planning on taking my computer to home stay. Email will be best, I presume, though it will be sporadic. I would also appreciate an update on life in the states, so feel free to comment or message me! Until then,

    Hi, Jer Ber!

I’m so glad to hear that things are going well so far. My fingers are crossed for a good host family. I can’t wait to hear all about them!

Oh, and I definitely want your phone number, so send it my way when you get a chance.

P.S. Every time I comment, I’m going to provide you with a snippet of what’s going on here. My snippet for today: Relay For Life (my sixth one!) is this weekend. The weather is supposed to be perfect, so I’m excited 🙂

    Love you!

Hey dude, glad to hear everything is going swimmingly so far. Keep us posted when you can! I’ll copy the snippet idea from V:

Promised my friends I’d do a charity 5K this past Saturday morning. Also promised my other friends I’d come to their party on Friday night. Drank until 3:30, was up until 5:30, then woke up at 7:30 to go the race, hungover and sleep-deprived. It felt equivalent of preseason our senior year on the day after my 21st haha.
